II. Overview
Vault 70 near Salt Lake City, Utah, was the only Vault to contain any Mormons, and the original 1000 made sure to preserve their religion accordingly. In 2190, when the Vault opened, the vault dwellers started to scourge the Wasteland for a new home. Finding the ruins of Ogden, Utah, along with a decent fresh water source, the Mormons made their new home, calling it New Canaan.
At First, it was the decision of the Elders to distance themselves from outsiders; this chain of thought however changed with the coming of the next generation, who decided that any tribes found within the surrounding regions were perhaps descendants of Mormons, and deserved salvation. Over the years many tribes were slowly converted, with the Original vault dwellers keeping themselves separated by higher social classes and maintaining leadership.
Polygamy was introduced around 2230, when the Elders made the decision to follow the gospel more closely. It was from this date that the rights of women within the influence of New Canaan began to tarnish, almost completely. Women became an object of trade, in which men would trade a wife or daughter in order to gain lands or influence. By 2300, the number of wives a man owns often is a representation of his social status. Women are expected to be completely obedient to their husbands, and answer to their every need. In turn the husbands must promise each of their wives proper housing and sustenance. Some of the men will take this to its extreme limits.
By 2300, the Mormon Nation of New Canaan (often referred to as ‘The Mormon Lands’ by outsiders) is quite extensive, and quite secretive to outsiders. While the Mormons openly trade their wives to the Great Khans, they keep many of their beliefs and traditions behind closed doors, especially in the presence of the NCR. As far as any outsider is concerned, the Mormons appear to be humble traders and scavengers, trading with lands as far as the Capital Wasteland.
Within the borders are a series of compounds, some consisting of one family. The compounds are often grouped together into small communities, with the only true city being the Capital, New Canaan. While compounds dot the outskirts, the town itself is much like many outsider towns.
III. Government
The Government of New Canaan is the Church. The Church oversees all aspects of New Canaan. They dictate laws, lifestyle, liberties, and taxes. The Church is lead by ‘The Prophet’ or president of the Church, and a council of twelve called the Quorum of Twelve Apostles. It is notable that only those of the Originating faith, or those that are descendants of Vault Dwellers, can ever hope to achieve such a high rank, or any rank above Bishop. Each settlement has a Church in which a leading Bishop administers faith and law; barring that, the most senior male is in charge.
